It’s that time of year again: time to take stock, re-assess, and re-commit. New Years resolutions get a bad rap, but I’m all for them. I do some of my most powerful goal- and intention-setting at this time of year. Sometimes I’m more specific with it than at other times, but overall I’m big for living life intentionally and I love the blank slate feeling of a new year.
This year, we’re getting real with our resolutions.
Did you know that only 12-20% of people who set new years resolutions actually succeed with them? That’s one low success rate. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like those odds.
Before working as a nutritional therapist, I worked as a business consultant and coach, and spent the better part of my time helping businesses set goals and achieve them. Now, as an NTP, I spend much of my time doing the same with my clients, but focusing on their health and lifestyle.
Over time I’ve noticed that similar things differentiate the times when people achieve their goals vs. when they don’t, whether we’re in a business or personal context. Lots of factors are specific to the individual, but two seem to be universal:
- The goal aligns with their true priorities (sometimes this isn’t as obvious as it seems)
- They have systems and conditions thought through and in place from the beginning that set them up for success.
Today I have a gift for you.
Here’s the exercise I’ve used with many clients over the years to help set goals that are truly meaningful, doable, and set up for success right from the start. Using this process was a game-changer for me. Certain big life goals that I’d tried to achieve multiple times (running a marathon and writing a book are two recent biggies) were finally manageable – I could wrap my mind around what was truly needed to make them a reality.
You don’t need to want to run a marathon for this exercise to be helpful. If you’re setting New Year’s Resolutions this year, take some time to go through this worksheet.
Pick just one or two goals that you really want to lock down, and put them through this process.
