I get asked a lot what my next book is going to be and while I have a few ideas swimming about, I got all hot to trot on one idea in particular: a book on migraines. After all, having struggled with them since my early teens, I have become something of an expert on how to prevent, mitigate, and manage them.
Of course my first step after jotting down some initial ideas was to do a quick Amazon search for books on the topic. To my dismay, a book was scheduled for release just months from that day on exactly I wanted to write about: The Migraine Miracle: A sugar-free, gluten-free, ancestral diet to reduce inflammation and relieve your headaches for good. Sigh. And it was coming out by the very publisher who published our first two books! Darn.
What’s a girl to do but get a copy and read it?
That’s exactly what I did, and within a few pages I realized that author Dr. Josh Turknett, neurologist and clinical researcher in this very area, was in fact significantly more qualified than me to write this book. (Hey, I’ll be the first to admit it!) In fact, it’s by far the best book I’ve ever read on the topic.
First, Dr. Turknett gives an incredibly validating explanation of the migraine experience. If you’ve ever had a migraine, you know the extreme pain and debilitation it brings. It is most definitely not “just a headache.” One of the biggest emotional hurdles I’ve had on my migraine journey is explaining this to my non-migraine-experiencing family and friends. It’s hard to describe the fear and obsession that arise from the quest for finding that perfect storm of factors that will trigger a migraine. In reading his first chapters, I found great comfort in knowing I was not alone.
Turknett’s deep scientific understanding of what’s happening in the body bio-chemically during a migraine is tremendously helpful in making sense of the intensity of symptoms. What I loved most was the powerful analogy he gave that explains how to determine your own unique combination of factors that can trigger a migraine (I won’t spoil it for you because I can’t do it justice in this limited space).
When he gets to solutions, dietary solutions in particular, I was cheering out loud I was so delighted to hear his recommendations. The three utmost important things you can do to drastically reduce the number and frequency of migraines in your life are:
1) Adopt a sugar-free diet
Amen to that! We’ve been doing this for years with our Sugar Control Detox – is it any surprise that one of the many pieces of feedback we hear from participants is how they eliminated their headaches?
2) Eliminate gluten
Yes, yes and more yes. Here’s what I think about a gluten-free diet, and oh, by the way, every recipe we’ve included in our two books are gluten-free.
Personal note: for the last few years I’ve eaten mostly gluten-free – probably 90-95%. But within the last few months I’ve eliminated it completely and have noticed that this has been a major factor in my migraines. This is something I *knew*, but never being diagnosed with a formal sensitivity it was hard for me to implement in my life. The one time I’ve cheated, I immediately got a migraine. The lesson: “mostly” gluten-free isn’t gluten-free at all. In fact, it takes a full 6 months to completely clear gluten from your body.
3) Eat an ancestral, traditional diet
This is what I call “eating naked” – getting back to the basics of a nutrient-dense, whole foods diet and getting rid of the nasty processed stuff. Honestly, when you do the above two factors, you’ll have gone a long way on this one.
All three of these critical approaches rid the body of inflammation, which is ultimately what set you up for the migraine experience to start with.
Turknett’s book is outstanding and I can’t recommend it highly enough. If you have migraines, it is a must-read. It’s that simple. Implementing the changes he suggests in this book will either eliminate the migraines in your life for good, or at the very least reduce them to a manageable level. (If you still struggle with migraines after you’ve implemented his recommendations, you may have some undiagnosed food sensitivities or digestive issues that you need to address, and this is work best done with a trained holistic practitioner.)

I’ve had migraines since I was 15. Now my daughter, who is about to turn 15 had her first migraine. I’d like to keep her from dealing with a lifetime of migraines like her mother.
I find it so difficult to imagine life without sugar! I could use some help with getting off it.
I have had migraines since I was about 8. I have been searching for most of my adult life for ways to mitigate and manage them. I look forward to reading this book!
My grandfather, two aunts, two female cousins, and I all suffer from migraines. I got my first migraine when I was pregnant with my son about twenty years ago and now he gets them on occasion. I am just NOW discovering the connection of migraines when I eat dessert. I really need help now that I have a five-year old daughter who will likely follow in these hereditary footsteps.
I too struggle with debilitating migraines.,I’ve tried many things but have had no long-term success. I’d love to win that book!
Congratulations, Jeannie! You’re one of our winners! Please email us at info (at) eatnakednow (dot) com with your mailing address and we’ll get that in the mail to you as soon as we can.
Really interested in the book. I get headaches daily and considered going gluten free to be headache free.
I absolutely enjoy your newsletters! THey are all well researched and practical. THank you.
I’ve been dealing with migraines since I was 10 years old.and now I’m 25. It’s time to get rid of them once and for all.
I’ve had migraines for years!
And I have to agree with you, that if the above-mentioned things don’t get rid of your migraines, you most likely have food allergies, which I did. Actually I have SIBO, which messed up my digestion completely. Now if I could just get rid of the SIBO…sighs.
My friend suffers from migraines very often and has tried everything…. Including botox injections!! I want to share this with her … I just hope she will listen!!
I’ve suffered with migraines since my early twenties and also found they for worse in pregnancy. Would love a copy of the book!!
I have been dealing with this devastating chronic pain since 1982.
This article if it proves “TRUE” I will be for ever thankful.
My daughter suffers with semi hemispheric migraines (numbness on 1/2 of her body and the same time). Never really discovered what was causing it. She cut out beef for a while and now is gluten free and sugar free (mostly). I have several really close friends that suffer from Migraines as well. I am going to forward this post to them. Thank you!
I started getting migraines in my teens. I would be fine during stress, but afterwards they would hit hard. Now the tension has moved to my stomach. I have IBS which flares up in the morning at any sign of stress in the coming day. My stepmother gets horrible migraines and I would like to give this book to her. I think the diet recommendations would help with her back pain also.
I’ve been getting migraines since my first pregnancy, 18 years ago; since then, sometimes in a given month I’d have a migraine more days than I didn’t! I’ve been gluten free/dairy free for 12 years, and have just started autoimmune Paleo 6 months ago. But I’m still getting the migraines several times/month! This book is giving me hope that there must be more that I can do to stop the migraines! I have several friends whose teenage daughters get migraines, too, and I’d love to be able to offer them more help as well. Thanks for your great website, for the great health tips, and for the book offer!
I started dealing with migraines after cancer treatment. Only recently have I found out about diet changes that will help. Thanks for your informative and very helpful newsletters.
I have suffered with Migraines for over 13 years and 2 of my closest friends both have debilitating migraines and their doctors offer no help. I’m ready to get rid of these for good- naturally!
My little daughter who is 8 years old is suffering from bad migraines multiple times a month. I have been trying to counter them with diet and oils since I do not want her to have to go on migraine medication. This book may help us adjust her diet early on so she hopefully will be able to improve her migraines.
I see migraine patients in my clinic and would love to have more resources for them
I have been suffering with migraines for years now and most of the information I have gotten has been through my own research, not the doctors! And I’ve seen plenty of doctors and too many MRI’s and Cat scans and toooo much medications that never worked. My continued suffering has kept me on my quest to find the cure…. there has to be a cure. No human was meant to suffer like this!
I have headaches several times a month, usually associated with times of hormone changes, and I’m getting tired of taking Advil! It would be nice to have them much less often. I would love a copy of the book!
I work with many women who get migraines and to be able to help them would be fantastic for them and for me. To be able to share with others that by making different choices, migraines can either be reduced or completely eliminated. How cool is that? This is why I’d love a copy of the book 🙂
I have been getting migraines almost my whole life, and my son is following in my footsteps. I have tried to deal with them for both of us diet-wise, but could use the expert advise!
To be honest, I would just like to win something; especially something of value. I have struggled with migraines to the point they manifested symptoms of a stroke. I know many that have struggled most of their lives with them. I would love to pass this info on and help others.
I would love to win this book, because my husband- a disabled Army veteran has been getting daily, blinding migraines for the last two years, partially due to the bone spurs at the top of his spine. He fights through the pain each day to care for our two daughters and me. I am also disabled, and three years ago developed a very rare nerve disorder. I’ve had one failed brain surgery, and am due for another one soon- this has a 30% chance of reducing the feeling of my right ear being violently stabbed every moment or every day. As a result of this pain, I also get migraines occasionally, but mine are not nearly as ferocious as my husband’s migraines are. I’d like to help him feel better, because we have a long road ahead of us. Due to our pain we are incredibly poor and cannot keep up with normal jobs. We do freelance work and are running a GoFundMe fundraiser, because my brain surgery must take place out of state. There are simply no qualified doctors in my state to perform my surgery, as I discovered after my first brain surgery was done incorrectly. We can barely afford rent, never mind plane tickets and a hotel for him while I’m in the hospital. I’m sorry for writing so much! As I said, If I could help ease my husband’s migraines I believe he would be well enough to care for me through my next surgery, and then he will be due for a long-postponed spinal surgery to address the bone spurs at the top of his spine. Thanks so much for sharing information and a giveaway for this most helpful sounding book!
Migraines are a PAIN, pun intended. I’ve been carrying this pain for far too many years, it gets old, exhausting and annoying. I have recently started ‘cleaning up’ my diet and it is definitely helping. I still have a LONG way to go, but I am at that point in my life now where I am ‘thirsting’ after knowledge and love reading everything and anything I can get my hands on that can help me live a happier, longer, healthier life. Thanks for your site!!!
I found your website through Trudy Scott’s recent Anxiety Telesummit. I’ve suffered migraines since first grade and they’ve grown much worse since having children. I come from a long line of migraine sufferers, so up until very recently, I just thought it was something I had to deal with and medicate. Thanks to all I learned in the telesummit, I have a much better appreciation for how foods and nutrients impact physical and emotional health. I’m on the road to eliminating gluten (which I’m finding a little overwhelming) and hopefully dairy as well. I’d love to see future posts about how to eat well on a budget!
I would love to win this book! I am a migraine sufferer as are quite a few of my friends! I sometimes get to the point where I feel like I just want to die to end the pain- it can be SO awful! But I also believe it would help in other areas of my life as well, such as in losing weight and with digestive issues and autoimmune issues. Our local doctors have been no help whatsoever- they will not even remotely consider a dietary approach- only want to throw pills or creams at you and make you feel like a superstitious ignoramus for suggesting it. I know there are many of us out there that can benefit from this so good luck to all of us!
Several people in my family have had migraines for years and I would love to read this book and if I can get it for free, why not? 🙂
My sister has struggled with horrible migraines since we were little children. She has tried every traditional medicine under the sun and some natural holistic approaches as well. But only once did she ever try a dietary approach and I know it wasn’t this. I think she would benefit immensely from this. If we don’t win the book, I’ll probably buy it for her!
I suffered with migraines as a teen and they stopped. Stop since being in a car accident in university they’ve started again and the neurologist said that they were normal since nothing was found after tests over 5 years ago. They suggested daily preventative medication which I declined and go to the chiropractor and saw an allergist. They still happen although not as often as before which almost daily. And I need to try another alternative.
I too have struggled with migraines most of my life. I have attempted to go gluten-free the last year and noticed a vast improvement from 2-3 times per month to once every 3-4 months and, yes, it generally happened when I gave in to a craving for gluten + sugar, pastries! Is there a supplement that will help with the carb/sugar cravings? Also, I get migraines with the change in weather and living in Oregon, there are a lot of weather changes here! Fall and spring are killer headache times for me. Does the book address this issue?
Congratulations, Gloria! You’re one of our winners. Please email us at info (at) eatnakednow (dot) com with your mailing address and we’ll get that book shipped out to you as soon as we can.
The book sounds great. I’d like to get it so that I can help my friends and clients. Thanks for the good work you do!!
I have been suffering from migraines for 30 years and no doctor ever explored a dietary cause. I would love this book to help eliminate triggers. My daughter recently started getting migraines as well and I will pass the book on to her.
I have had migraines off and on since I was a teenager, but recently in the last 3 months I am averaging one every few weeks. I recently started taking prescription medication daily to make life manageable. I hate having to take drugs every day, but I felt like there was no other option. If this book could provide me with the tips and tools to help me manage my migraines without medication that would be amazing.
I have suffered from migraines since I was 10. Now I have a daughter who is also suffering. Thank you for posting this!
My mom has suffered migraines since a little girl, among other issues that I now feel are all diet caused – or at least exacerbated by diet. I’d love her to read this to try to help.
My oldest son started having migraines when he was eight years old, and his younger brother just started having them last year at age 11. My husband has fewer since he cut out most sugar, but he’s still eating gluten, so they’re not gone completely. I don’t often get the actual headaches. I have a condition known as migraine-related vertigo, which is just exactly what it sounds like. I was put on an anti-depressant to control the multiple-times-daily dizzy spells. It works, but I would much prefer to control these little monsters with dietary changes and ditch the meds. Bottom line, this book sounds like it would be a huge blessing for our family, and I definitely would love to have it!
I would like to win a copy of this book for my dad. He suffers from chronic post-stoke headaches that are often debilitating and leave him feeling like nothing will ever help him. My younger sister is also starting to experience terrible headaches. My older sister has also been experiencing extreme migraines for years now. I would love for them to be able to read this book, and I would also like to read it.
I would love to receive this book. I am a certified holistic nutrition consultant and have many people complain about migraines. I would love to have this in my educational library to further help my clients as well as educate myself more on the topic. Thanks for offering this giveaway!
I would love to have this book to give to my daughter. I had migraines for 50 years and then went grain and sugar free. Immediate change. My daughter has severe migraines (inherited I’m certain) and nothing I tell her will change her mind to ascribe to my way of eating. She depends upon botox injections on her trigeminal nerves…Not a way to live….
I’ve been a migraine sufferer for over twenty years. I recently cut out the sugar and gluten and have seen vast improvement. I would love to read more about how completely eliminate the migraines altogether. I am beyond thrilled to finally have discover a link to controlling my migraines. It makes giving up sugar MORE than worth it to live my life without the constant fear of being in agony for days at a time! Thank you for offering this giveaway!
I would love to have this book not for myself (although I would read it) but for a friend who’s 7 year old son struggles with migraines on a regular basis. It effects every area of their life from school to sports to vacation, etc. They can not go anywhere or do anything without having a potential migraine looming overhead. They’ve been to many doctors and the ONLY advice they’ve been given his feed him every 2 hours, keep him hydrated, and pump him full of Tylenol. Please, please, please…this book could change their life!!!
I’d like to win this book for my sister in law. As long as I’ve known her she’s dealt with debilitating migraines several times a month. Thank you for such a wonderful giveaway!
Does this work with abdominal migraines/cyclic vomiting too? If so, I’d like to try it with my son.
Hi Katy – not surprisingly given their DNA, both my kids have suffered with cyclic vomiting syndrome. Eating the way I outline in the book works for them. The only time it occurs now is if they have a cheat meal (birthday parties, special occasions, etc.) – which we hate, but the upside is they both (ages 6 and 9) readily appreciate the food-health connection, and already have a sophisticated understanding of their triggers.
Incidentally, don’t know if your son also suffers with nocturnal leg aches (another childhood migraine equivalent, IMO), but we’ve also seen the exact same connection between cheat meals and nighttime awakenings.
I’ve suffered from migraines ever since giving birth to my 2 kids. I never had them before, so I know life without them and I’d love to get back to it!
I’ve had migraines since I was a teenager. Sometimes they incapacitate me for almost a whole day. This book may be just the thing I need.
I would love to have a copy of this book. I have suffered with migraines for as long as I can remember. They are debilitating and take so much from my life. I have been trying to live a healthier lifestyle in order to improve my quality of life.
I didn’t win the book, so I bought it on Kindke for iPad a couple of days ago. Thank you so much for the recommendation! The author explained the migraine process very well. I’ve made a lot of progress in my real food journey, and this book was the extra push I needed to help me commit to quitting sugar. Thank you!
Delighted to hear it, Nicole!
I’m a single hard working momma who suffers from fibromyalgia pain as well as constant and persistent headaches. I’ve been undergoing prescription medication treatment for about 5 years now. I would really like to read more from your book to learn other more natural ways to treat my pain so I can spend more quality time with my five year old son where I’m not medicated so heavily.
I have migraines for 16 years, and almost any medicine works well. Now I am trying with botox but anyway I need pills too. I would like to read the book to learn how to change mi diet and improve my live.
I’ve had migraines since I was 17, I’m now in my 50s. I’ve tried many medications, herbs, lots of doctors, diets and now I am trying essential oils.I really want to be healthy!
I’m bookmarking this…thanks for sharing!
I’m actually doing research for my precious sister in law who suffers from migraines. She’s tried everthing.. Meds, neurologists, physical therapy, etc. these migraines are ruling her life. She’s a new mom and honestly is missing out on life. These nasty migraines control her, she’s getting them 1-2 times a week.. For 6 years!!! I cames across your book and am praying to God this works for her. We are at this point scared for her life due to all the meds she’s on. She needs her life back!!
Shelli, I am so sorry to hear of your sister’s troubles. This book is an excellent resource. Definitely try it. If it doesn’t work, there could be deeper issues – food sensitivities and gut healing – that are at the root of the issue. i have a lot of experience working with this. Please let her know I’m here if she needs support. I struggled from migraines for years – and they got worse when I had my daughter. I feel her pain. She doesn’t have to live that way. There are definitely options.
I would love a copy of this book. I have suffered from debilitating migraines for 18 years. I just want to enjoy life again.
I’m curious if you tried this diet and if it was successful. I’ve suffered migraines since I was 5 years old, so over 20 years now. And get them about 15 to 18 times a month. I’ve tried everything; medicine, procedures and nutrient wise(SERIOUSLY, everything) and I am careful with what I eat. But I’m starting to think something stricter would be best. Thanks!
Andrea – this diet was instrumental for me in reducing the migraines, but it didn’t eliminate them completely. What eliminated them completely (and yes, I am now delighted to say I am migraine-free) was going much deeper clinically and doing deep digestive healing work alongside identifying and temporarily removing food sensitivities. I wrote about my approach here. Hidden food sensitivities are a huge trigger for migraines and I had several I never would have imagined to healthy foods i was eating every day. Feel free to reach out (email: info (at) eatnakednow (dot) com) if you’re interesting in doing some of this work.
Greetings! Happy new year! I’ve have friends who are suffering for their migraines for years. I want to help them that’s why I want to have this book.
I’ll recommend this site and promote your book to the rest of my friends who need health guidance.
All the best and Thank you.
What do you mean by, “it takes a full six months to clear gluten from your body”? Gluten, like everything you eat, is digested and passed within a couple days. There is no evidence that inflammation related to gluten in intolerant folks takes six months to resolve….
Hope, the way I wrote that was misleading. It’s actually the antibodies to gluten (that many people have) take a full 6 months to clear after complete elimination of gluten from the diet. And the antibodies are what give many people symptoms (not in all cases – there are many ways that gluten isn’t good for you, but inflammation due to immune activation via antibodies is one of the biggest).
I have been a chronic migraine sufferer for 4years. Usually 15 a month. And I get one thunderclap migraine a month which I have to go to hospital. I’ve tried eliminating dairy, wheat, avocados, tomatos, MSG, chilli, garlic, canola oil. Amongst other things. I’ve tried Inderal, Topomax, Sandomigran. All of which have failed. I’ve tried botox. I’m sorry for every person who suffers from migraines. I would love to have a copy of your book. To end my suffering. I wish I wasn’t born. I have seen 3 neurologists. I really need an answer. ??❤❤???
Oh goodness, Samira, it really sounds like you could benefit from working with a functional practitioner. Have you tried that route? Eliminating common culprits sometimes is just not enough (it wasn’t for me) and requires much deeper testing and investigation.
Your story sounds almost identical (no joke) to mine…
I even had a full hysterectomy last August which one of my neurologist told me would most likely end my migraines. I thought I had finally found the answer for about six weeks after my hysterectomy I did not have one migraine first time in most of my life I wasn’t on injections for my migraines. But unfortunately They came back and strong…☹️ I don’t have an answer for you, but I hope you find one I can completely sympathize!!
I’ve suffered with migraines for over 20 years now…I’ve tried everything from acupuncture to chiropractic to food eliminations to prescriptions drugs. Still struggling with migraines that last 3 days with intensity of pain elevating with every day. Please help!
Deborah – Have you read this book yet? If not, it’s a really good starting point. If you follow the steps he outlines and still don’t have resolution, then I’d reach out to a functional nutritionist or doctor and they can help you get to the bottom of what’s going on. It can be some hidden gut issues, food sensitivities, a whole host of things… but you’ll need a practitioner to navigate that with you. Start with the steps in this book – they are really effective.
I would love to have this book I am always looking for a new way to solve my migraines. I have had headaches since I have been in high school and soon I will be 58 years old. I have had MRI’s, Katscan. I have sleep apnea which they thought oh that will help your migraines, not. January this year it started with around 20 headaches that month. February around maybe 10. March hasn’t been as bad. I have tried dieting eating better. I have tried Beeswax from Raleigh products and spread over my forehead and neck. Tried therapy on the neck. Heating pad. Then over the years I had taken so many over the counter medicine that I also have acid reflux. GRRR. Its been very frustrating. I continue to going to the doctor to solve these frustrating migraines.
I would like to have this book to help me manage my Chronic Migraines. I too like many others mentioned above who have left comments have bad migraines. I have a heriniation loab at the base of my skull and I also have high blood pressure. The dr mentioned surgery but I don’t want to be cut on. I am scared of the outcome. I have tried a variation of meds, eating certain foods/ diet but no relief. Oh don’t mention the weather which plays a big factor with my migraines. Oh no not rain again…here’s another migraine coming on. Well that’s my migraine life in a nut shell. Thanks. Terry Engels from Alabama
My migraines were first diagnosed when I was five and able to explain the visual aura well enough for the doctors to know what is going on. I have tried all the medical treats but the continue to get worse, I will be 50 next month and now I average 26 days per month with migraines. I have of course tried on my own to figure out good triggers, but would love to have a complete diet suggested to me. Especially since I’m too exhausted to figure it out on my own!
Please reach out at info@eatnakedkitchen.com to set up an appointment. I’ve witnessed first hand the massive improvements Margaret has made with her own migraines.
My wife has had migraines since she was a young girl I feel so sorry for her and I can’t help her with the pain she is feeling. I belive if she changes her diet it could help alot. I have been reading about migraines and diet seems to be the cause for alot of headachs. Maybe I can get her to try and change her diet, thanks for your help
Ben
I used to think that my migraines were a complex combination of heredity and allergies to things triggered by my diet. I’m probably right in that, but never thought about a complete change in the way I am eating/lifestyle, until now. Both my parents and whole family suffer migraines – so I have been told ‘oh dear, you have bad wiring’ by a neurologist. I just accepted that answer. Then I discovered orange juice was a trigger. 30 years later I have only just discovered aspartame is another trigger. It shocked me to find I know so little about my migraines and no-one in the medical profession has really been that interested in helping me find out any more to reduce them. I am a regular triptan user and rely on topirimate which makes me drowzy – I need to find a better solution. It defies belief there is so little investment in this area of medicine – but why would there be when the pharmaceutical companies are supplying such vast amount of meds to us all !?! Well done to Dr Turknett for getting this information out there for free … so many would not have done that.
I have been suffering from migraines for 10 years (it is now 2019). Up to this point, I have been convinced that the migraines were something I inherited from my mother, and a former boss. Then, the migraines got even worse in mid-2018 when I was T-boned in my car and I whacked my head against the door jamb. I now have 17 migraines minimum each month and the side-effects of the anti-migraine meds are almost as bad.
About 3 months ago, a co-worker suggested I read a book on the Plant Paradox, and my wife suggested Dr. Turknett’s book on The Migraine Miracle. I am almost finished reading them and am astonished at the information! What I need now is a solid cook book, or two, that provides me with wholesome recipes that will allow me to cook food that my body can actually digest and use the nutrients. But where to get such a cook book? I must bet one into my hands and begin my journey down the road of better eating.
May I offer my thanks to Dr. Turknett and Dr. Gundry for the work they have done in clearly defining the food problem and how our food pyramid is upside down and messed up.
Hi Russ, there are definitely a lot of great cookbooks out there that can get pretty specific to your needs. If you’re mostly needing gluten-free, delicious recipes, then I do recommend our cookbook, the Naked Foods Cookbook. We use it religiously and really enjoy it. If you’re wanting to get more specific, you might try Mickey Trescott’s The Nutrient Dense Kitchen.
I have been a migraine sufferer for over 25 years. Usually 12+ a month. It has disrupted my life, work and relationships and I am ready to do something about it!
